How much should you tip taxi drivers, asks Jacksonville Transportation Group

You hop into a taxi to go across town and then realize you have to decide on what tip to pay the driver? Is there a correct amount, asks Jacksonville Transportation Group, LLC?

There is no hard-and-fast rule, but tipping 15-20 percent in the United States for courteous, reliable service can help expedite matters and save you the embarrassment of dealing with an unhappy or indignant driver. It might be a good idea to give an additional dollar or two if the driver has to handle your bags, advises Jacksonville Transportation Group.

The amount you tip will depend upon where you are in the United States. If you hire a cab in New York, for example, 15 percent might upset your driver.

In some countries, tipping taxi drivers is not expected, or you can exit the cab with a minimal tip of rounding up to the next dollar. That's because tipping is not part of such countries' cultural norm and drivers are paid adequately. Two or three dollars, or even 10 percent of the bill, may be standard in other places. Find out before you take a ride.

Jacksonville Transportation Group suggests asking the taxi driver, when you first get into the vehicle, approximately how much the fare will be. That gives you time to work out about how much tip you need to include. In some cities, there are mandated, set fees from airports to the downtown area posted inside the cab, so that really helps with your mathematical calculation.

A tip is considered a reward for good service. Hopefully, the cab ride was just that.

Remember to carry some extra cash with you, before getting into the taxi.
